GALLERYSKE is proud to present Bani Abidi's debut solo in India.
The show which is on display from 21 April to 28 May (preview on 20 April) 2008, presents three bodies of work, Reserved, a 9-min double channel video made in 2006; The Address, a series of 30" x 40" Diasec C-prints first made in 2007 and her most recent, Security Barriers A - L, a suite of 12, 11" x 16" inkjet prints made earlier this year in 2008.
Bani has been working primarily with video over the past 7 years. The group exhibitions she has participated in over the past two years include, Thermocline of Art - New Asian Waves, ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany (2007), the Singapore Biennale, Singapore (2006), Sub Contingent - The South Asian Sub Continent in Contemporary Art, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy (2006), and Contemporary Commonwealth, National Gallery of Victoria, Australia (2006). Her recent solo shows include those at the TPW Gallery, Toronto (2007); Haines Gallery, San Fransisco, (2006), VM Art Gallery, Karachi (2006).
In a manner that borders on parody, Bani Abidi's work walks the tightrope of subtlety and directness in her explorations of the construct of national identity and history as an act of myth-making. Her early videos and photographic works often mix elements of performance and popular culture to explore the processes of political machinations, the collective imagination and identity formation.
