Eugène Atget (Jean-Eugène-Auguste Atget, born 1856, Libourne / Gironde, d. 1927, Paris) was a photographer and founder of the social documentary photography. He created the "Photographic collection of old Paris": architectural photos, parks, street scenes, demolition areas, etc.. His photos served as templates for Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, a.o. In 1926 he made the acquaintance of Berenice Abbott and the Surrealists. Berenice Abbott acquired 2000 negatives and published them in 1930. His work was shown in 1977 at the documenta 6 in Kassel.
