Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Giambattista Piranesi, b. 1720, Venice; d. 1778, Rome) was an etcher, engraver, draftsman, archaeologist, architect, interior designer and architectural theorist of the Baroque and Classicist periods ("Black Romanticism"). He became famous for his etchings of the dungeon series Carceri d'Invenzione di G. Battista Piranesi. Giambattista Piranesi was an honorary member of the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Roman Accademia di San Luca.
