Jacob Riis (b. 1849, Ribe, Denmark; d. 1914, Massachusetts) is a Danish-American photographer and social activist. He emigrated to the United States in 1870, where he became a police reporter. Flash photography had only recently been invented, which he used for his work in the New York streets at night.
