Merce Cunningham (b. 1919, Centralia / Washington, d. 2009, Manhattan, New York City) was a dancer and experimental choreographer. He studied at Cornish School for Performing and Visual Arts Seattle, collaborated with John Cage and made performances with stage pictures by Robert Rauschenberg. In 1995 he was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
