Paul Gauguin (born 1848 in Paris, died 1903 in Atuona Hiva-Oa / South Pacific) developed the 'Synthetism' with Émile Bernard in 1886. His work had a great influence on Symbolism and Expressionism. Until 1888 he worked together with Vincent van Gogh in Arles until whose nervous breakdown. Since 1901 he lived in the South Pacific Island of Hiva-Oa / Marquesa Islands. 1887 and 1903 he released the books "Noa-Noa" and "Avant et après".
