50 Jahre / Years documenta 1955-2005

This exhibition is possible for the support of different institutions: Documenta GmbH, documenta Archiv, Kunsthalle Fridericianum und Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen.IFA, Goethe Institut and the Foundatión Federal for the culture in Germany

The Domus Artium 02 of Salamanca will be the first and only centre of Spanish contemporary art that shows a retrospective route by one of the influential appointments but of international the contemporary art. The mythical one Documenta of Kassel celebrated year 2005 its 50 anniversary and for that reason the organization of the have prepared a didactic exhibition that analyzes the contents of each one of 11 editions.

When the 15 of July of 1955 Arnold Bode inaugurated in Kassel a denominated exhibition Documenta, it could not imagine that it would become one of the more excellent cultural events of the history of the art of century XX. Nevertheless Documenta has been object of alive controversy from the day of its birth and still today, it would have to consider several questions: Represents an exhaustive panorama of the present artistic scene or only the narrow perspective of each one of the commissioners of different editions? Is an independent festival of the vanguard art or rather a spectacle organized for the tourism like so many biennials?

On the other hand, Michael Glasmeier, commissioner of the project, have invited to 11 young German artists to make a work that pays tribute to each one of the 11 Documentas. Their works proposes an extended vision of the things and demonstrates a creative approach in relation to the file, parallel to the documentary approach, settling down with it a fruitful recent and the past present dialogue between. The 11 artists who participate in this project are: Friederike Feldmann, Kai Vöckler, Katrin von Maltzahn, Katharina Meldner, Sabine Groß, William Engelen, Linden tree Schulz, Andreas Seltzer, Heike Vogler, Jonathan Monk, Alexander Roob, Heidi Specker.

At the same time, the DA2 of Salamanca will show a selection of video programs that cross the history of this means in the different documenta. From the first passages in the use of this support in years 60 and 70 with historical pieces of Vito Acconci, Peter Weibel, Bruce Nauman or Nan June Paik, happening through the videographics revisions of “mythical” performances of artists like Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic or Valie Export, to present creators like Isaac Julien, Eija Liisa Ahtila or William Kentridge.
