Annie Leibovitz (1949) is perhaps the most famous living portrait photographer. Her shots of celebrities, including musicians, politicians and athletes, have been celebrated worldwide. Her work has included magazine, fashion, and advertising photography. Leibovitz strives to incorporate the public persona of her subject or sitter into each of her photos. Rather than static headshots, Leibovitz often uses her subject's entire body, most often while in motion, to dispel any artificial qualities. Many of Leibovitz's portraits of rock music celebrities have become signature images. A notable example is her portrait of the nude John Lennon on a bed with his fully clothed wife, Yoko Ono, the last portrait of Lennon before his death in 1980. Leibovitz has photographed for magazines as well as prestigious advertisers, such as Gap and American Express. In ‘American Music’ a wide range of American musicians is presented: from BB King and Lucinda Williams to P.Diddy and The White Stripes.
