Anton Henning is a painter who utilizes installation, video and sound, to create colourful and pop-decadent environments, or ‘lounges’. These witty, sexy and knowing spaces have made Henning one of the most interesting artists working in Germany today. Entwistle presents the first solo show of Henning’s work in the UK. A ten metre long painting of Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin fills the entire wall of the upper gallery, and the lower gallery is transformed into an Anton Henning lounge installation.
Anton Henning’s lounges, with their furniture, and painted walls and ceilings, create a specific context for his paintings, paintings that cross a number of appropriated genres, from pin-ups to 80s abstraction. Anton Henning’s work uses a number of self-referential re-occurring signatures - the ‘Hennling’ logo (which appears again and again in his paintings and animations), his band, The Manker Melody Makers (all the members of which are played by Henning himself), the lounge spaces and the glowing seating and bed structures that exist in the spaces. These ‘signatures’ are elements of Henning’s auto-poeitic universe, a universe where the signs, symbols and rules constantly refer back to themselves. It is through these complex systems that Henning explores painting’s functions and roles within art’s structures and presentations, popular social mediums and his own personal biography.
Anton Henning was born in Berlin in 1964, and lives and works in Berlin and Manker, Germany.
