BOX #01: Christian Falsnaes „Video Artist“
06/02/2018 to 07/08/2018

Christian Falsnaes always succeeds in convincing strangers to take part in his performance art. Using video and sound installations, the artist himself takes on the roll of choreographer and director, or assigns this role to those present, making them the figures of his art. His performaces, which are scripted but which participants nevertheless find surprising, are filmed and showcased in video installations. This work created together with the audience becomes central to the exhibition.

The performance art piece “Video Artist,” set in a former Jesuit church, gives a pop-culture rendering of the Stations of the Cross, the altar and the altarpiece. The Danish video artist encourages his audience to create a collective work of art. The video work, which inaugurates the project room BOX of the new Kunsthalle Mannheim, was commissioned by the Kunsthalle Mannheim in 2017 as part of their “On the Move” project. Christian Falsnaes (born in 1980) studied philosophy and fine art in Copenhagen and Vienna. His art has been exhibited at the Pinchuk Art Center in Kiev, the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art in Zurich, the ZKM in Karlsruhe, the Kunstverein Braunschweig, the Kunstverein Bielefeld, the Kunsthalle Vienna, the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2008 he was awarded an international performance prize in Trento and was nominated for the Preis der Nationalgalerie in 2015.
