David Rickard & Tommy Støckel

Differences in the gallery rooms is the starting point of the art works made by Tommy Støckel and David Rickard. During their month residency at LoBe, both artists decided to let the gallery layout and surfaces dictate the method in which they approached their work. Both David and Tommy come from a conceptual installation background, so this playful approach to the site-specific, looking at the space in terms of either volume or measurement, is a natural extension of their practice. Displacement has a central role in this show, in one way a shifting to unravel unknown measurements and in another way a transfer of position from one place to another. The floor works of both artists describe the characteristics or dimensional layout of the rooms, in an unobvious way, that explores rather than explains. An interest in hidden disruptions in the gallery’s surfaces, that exists in both the floor works is also continued in David’s delicate wall drawing. Tommy also plays with photogra phy to form a narrative which illustrates his hidden sculptural intervention, fooling perception with a slight shift in scale in his paper floor installation. His work often deals with standardisation and its deconstruction and here he has made a barely noticeable shift in accordance with the size of the room and the German industry standard.

LoBe is a residency-led contemporary art space, which provides artists with an opportunity to develop their practice within an environment that promo- tes dialogue, collaboration, exhibition making and interdisciplinary practi- ce. The aim of the project is to develop meaningful cross-cultural networks within a British German context by giving artists from the UK the opportu- nity to collaborate with Berlin based artist and visa versa, in our permanent space in Berlin.

Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Galerieraum ist gemeinsamer Ausgangs- punkt der künstlerischen Arbeiten von Tommy Støckel und David Rickard, die für die Dauer von einem Monat auf Einladung von LoBe zusammen gear- beitet haben. Beiden gemeinsam ist die konzeptuelle und installative Herangehensweise und die Arbeit mit Displacements. Displacement meint im engeren Sinne die Verschiebung, Verlagerung und Verrückung von et- was hin zu einem anderen Ort. Mittels Displacement werden Relationen zwi- schen Orten hergestellt und verborgene Strukturen sichtbar gemacht. Beide Künstler entwickelten Bodenarbeiten, die sich aufeinander und auf die um- gebenden Raumverhältnisse beziehen. Dabei lag der Fokus auf den Größen- verhältnissen, Volumen und Störungen im Raum, was sich beispielsweise in David Rickards Wandarbeit niederschlägt. Tommy Støckel setzt sich häufig mit Normierungen und deren Dekonstruktion auseinander. So hat er sein e Installation auf subtile Art und Weise, entsprechend der Größe des Raumes und der deutschen Industrie Norm (DIN) skaliert.

LoBe ist ein non-profit Projektraum mit Residenzprogramm, der 2009 ge- gründet wurde. LoBe ermöglicht KünstlerInnen aus London und Berlin für die Dauer von einem Monat eine dialogorientierte, kollaborative und interdis- ziplinäre künstlerischer Praxis an deren Ende eine Ausstellung in den Räu- men von LoBe steht.
