press release

Second Street invited Stacey Schmidt, Associate Curator, Corcoran Gallery of Art, to curate this exhibition of important leading-edge DC artists. Given the current renaissance of contemporary art in the Washington area and its proximity to Charlottesville, DC Now is both significant and timely. The show is comprised of recent work by nine artists who Schmidt considers among the most interesting working in the DC area today. The District arts scene is presently undergoing a revitalization, with successful new galleries opening to present the work of local and regional artists, several DC-based artists selected for solo or group museum shows, and a vital new arts district congealing around the rapidly developing Logan Circle area. This new energy can be seen in the artwork produced by a crop of locals of every stripe-recent transplants to what has always been a transient city, born-and-bred DC natives, and recent graduates of the several local art schools and programs.

Representing a wide range of media, technique, and contemporary trends, the nine artists featured are: Ken Ashton (photography); Joanne Bauer (painting); Jason Falchook (photography); David Jung (painting); Linn Meyers (drawing); Maggie Michael (painting); José Ruiz (multimedia/conceptual); Dan Steinhilber (sculpture); and Ian Whitmore (painting).
