press release

As of July 8, 2011, ARTER will be hosting Deniz Gül's first solo exhibition "5 Person Bufet," curated by Emre Baykal. "5 Person Bufet" is a multi-phase project that started out with performance poetry Deniz Gül began to write in 2009. 5 pieces of furniture constitute the backbone of the installation, which situates the tension between micro-power and meta-power, the inside and the outside at its core: Vitrine, Closet, Safe, Coffin and a Door turned into a room. With the furniture lined up side by side as monument-objects, "5 Person Bufet" explores the spaces of identity through the notion of power as it is exercised in various contexts: personal and social sphere as well as in the political and psychological domains. Via monumentalised pieces of furniture that can only accommodate one person, Gül is seeking the traces of her personal memory within a broader social and political memory.

The 5 pieces of furniture, rendered more private by the objects the artist places in them and additional minor touches, are accompanied by an unusual table. This peculiar table, with the performance it will host at the opening and the milk that will be boiled in the tray at its centre, transports the ritualistic dimension Deniz Gül particularly emphasises in her works to ARTER.

"5 Person Bufet" installation also captures the exhibition space by seeping into the windows. Applying the cut glass motifs of the most prominent sojourners of the vitrines of Turkish homes in the 80s; crystal ashtrays, sugar bowls and glass sets, to the windows of the exhibition space, Deniz Gül, lets in the natural light refracted by these motifs, surrounds the entire space with the fragility of a bell jar.

Born in 1982 in İzmir, Deniz Gül graduated from Sabancı University, Faculty of Social Sciences and Art, Department of Visual Arts in 2004. Among the group exhibitions she participated in are, Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean (2005), KHOJ Mumbai (2005), "Cultura Contemporania" (Barcelona, 2008); "İstanbul Traversée" realised in the scope of Lille 3000 (2009) and "Divercity" organised at CCA Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw (2010). Deniz Gül attended the artist exchange programme Tokyo Wondersite in Japan, in 2009 and the Istanbul Residency Program at Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center in 2010.
