"…Fancy Dance is focuses on the specific concept of a new vision toward the 21st century. It not only depicts the progression of art in the 21 century, but also lends a deeper understanding of the Korean and Japanese art cultures. In fact, the youths from the two countries have come together in the past to produce joint projects in the fields of movies, animation and music. This exhibition is held in Korea, facing a similar situation as Japan, which is one of the most advanced countries in Asia, and introduces the current generation works of young Japanese artists to provide an opportunity for mutual understanding of the culture and spirit of Japan and Korea. The exhibition title "Fancy Dance" is from one of Okano Reiko's comics about a young man who discontinues his work in funk music to inherit the family business. The story explores ideas about tradition, convention, and their relationships as reflected in modern day society. In addition to questions relating to the relationship between society and the individual, and the harmony of individuals, the comic "Fancy Dance" suggests new ways to build self-awareness and free oneself up from an entity without hiding away in Asian mass groupings. Such self-awareness and individuality is reflected in works of Japanese artists post 1990's, who frequently switch back and forth within the western definition of art to incorporate popular culture and ordinary life. Although these artists appear to be floating in media-centered hyper reality (Media Centered), their works are in fact based on formative art theories of western modern art, and full of valid questions. There is free outside communication with the firm framework of self-expression, and coexist with boundary-less attitudes that open oneself up. By introducing flexible yet perceptive Japanese modern art, the exhibition is surely the opportunity to expose the new meaning of identity that is diffusing out of Asia…" (by Yuko Hasegawa)
