Chisenhale Gallery presents the first UK exhibition of the work of Fernanda Gomes, one of Brazil’s leading young artists.
Gomes uses the sort of objects which remain unnoticed by others, in the bottom of our pockets, at the back of the shelves, beneath our feet. Like an obsessive collector of insignificants things, she makes an intimate art out of discarded cigarette papers, shards of leftover soap, wrappings and strings.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1960, Fernanda Gomes’ work was critically acclaimed at the 1994 Sao Paulo Biennale. In 1995, she represented Brazil in the 4th International Istanbul Biennial.
This exhibition is part of a series of cultural events, timed to coincide with the December visit to London by the President of Brazil.
