THE PRATO PROJECT combines a set of new marble sculptures by Thom Puckey with the monumental wall paintings of Jan van der Ploeg, inside the ground floor exhibition spaces of the Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art.
The joint project of these two artists brings into dialogue the chromatic abstraction of the two-dimensional painted motifs with the realism of the sculpted figures’ anticonventional content, and the monumentality of the murals with the sensual elegance of the marbles. The artists have worked together to bridge the physical gap that divides their works: extending the painted geometrical shapes on the walls into three dimensional form, as pedestals for beneath the statues. The exhibition matches the powerful tension confined within the sculptures with the fluctuating spatial dynamism suggested by the paintings.
