press release

This is the first exhibition that an Italian museum has devoted to the 34-year-old English artist. A great white hope of the Young British School, and heir to figurative art of the second half of the 20th century, close to the experiences of Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon, Saville has won the instant approval of public and critics alike, achieving staggering figures at the latest auctions. Her creativity focuses on typically feminine issues, which she also investigates through the interpretation of texts linked to the feminist movement.

About twenty works are on display in the Panorama galleries at MACRO, highlighting her study of the human body and the various manipulations to which it can be subjected, for example through plastic surgery. Jenny Saville has made ten drawings and six new oil paintings specially for the exhibition, which is curated by Danilo Eccher. They portray animal carcasses, and the faces and bodies of women who have been or are to be subjected to cosmetic surgery.

Born in Cambridge in 1970, she took her diploma in the Glasgow School of Art in 1992. She lives and works in London and Palermo. Her first exhibition was entirely bought up by the Saatchi Gallery of London and proved a resounding success.

She has received a number of international awards and has taken part in many group and solo exhibitions, including the British Institute Prize for Painting at the Royal Academy, London 1991, “Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection”, London 1997; “Territories” at the Gagosian Gallery, New York 1999; “The Nude in Contemporary Art” at The Aldridge Museum of Art, Connecticut, 1999; “Ant Noises 2” Saatchi Gallery, London 2000, “Disparities and Deformations. Our Grotesque” at the Fifth International Biennial in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2004.

An exhibition catalogue will be published in English and Italian by Electa, with a lavish selection of pictures of the artist’s work.
