Michael Landy will produce a site-specific project for The Power Plant's third edition of the Fleck Clerestory Commission Program. Landy's practice explores attitudes towards consumption, the cultural value of objects and questions of materialism. The artist is best known for his performance Break Down (2001), in which he systemically destroyed each and every one of his personal belongings with an assembly line of workers over the course of two weeks. The work was at once a critique of consumerism, as well as a personal and monumental emptying of the artist’s material possessions.
Landy’s process-based approach continues in his installation at The Power Plant. The artist will invite the public to collaborate in creating a wall of protest by sending in words, texts and slogans that represent their hopes and fears, expressing what makes them happy, angry or sad—from incidental, to monumental issues. With the help of assistants, Landy will transform selections from submitted content into red and white drawings of protest. Over the course of the exhibition, these drawings will be installed on the walls of The Power Plant's Fleck Clerestory; and as the exhibition develops, so the demonstration will grow, making visible the social conditions of a contemporary political reality. Through collaboration and accumulation, DEMONSTRATION will capture Canada's social and political landscape through the eyes of its inhabitants.
Landy’s commission at The Power Plant is the artist’s first exhibition presented in Canada.
Michael Landy (born 1963 in London, UK) lives and works in London, UK.
