Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla

MCASD has commissioned Los Angeles-based sculptor Nancy Rubins to create a permanent, large-scale work on the west side of our La Jolla facility. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this site-specific work will be an accumulation of boats and nautical parts—in part a nod to the importance of the fishing, recreational boating, and Naval impact on the region. Manipulating materials in space, Rubins transforms civilization’s detritus into magical formal concoctions. Held together by welds and wire, her sculptures are clearly under tension, and her commission at MCASD will be miraculously cantilevered above the heads of viewers
