Tram Stop by Paul Rooney is the first work to be unveiled in the Gallery’s new Vision Space, which is to host an exciting programme of new media works.

Tram Stop (2005) is an atmospheric plasma screen video, depicting a view out to sea past a tram stop in the foreground. The image is accompanied by a strange and harmonious soundtrack of two women, singing a conversation about the weather in opposite hemispheres of the earth. One voice sings of summer; the other, winter, while unpredictable backing voices lend an otherworldly dimension to the evening scene as it is gradually becomes lit by orange streetlights.

The video evokes ideas of identity and excitement, with a sense of the extra-ordinary, of the separate and of the strange and distant horizons arising from an ordinary and intimate situation.
