The twelfth presentation in White Columns’ project space The Bulletin Board – a 6’ x 4’ glazed aluminum bulletin board installed in our entrance lobby – is of three recent photographs – shot in Australia and Canada - by the New York-based artist Ryan Foerster (b. 1983, Newmarket, Canada.).
Foerster’s work takes the form of a kind of ‘landscape’ art. Mapping his immediate milieu – social, cultural, physical, emotional, etc. – Foerster’s sometimes melancholic work operates in a continuum with the ‘social aesthetics’ of Larry Clark, Walter Pfeiffer, Nan Goldin, Jack Pierson, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Ryan McGinley. Like these artists Foerster engages in a personal exploration of the complex terrain of biography, autobiography, fiction, and narrative.
Foerster’s display will be accompanied by a new ‘zine that incorporates aspects of his recent engagement with the legacy of the seminal band Hüsker Dü.
