Shilpa Gupta & Iman Issa: Look Around

In “Look round” Artericambi gallery is introducing a sample of Shilpa Gupta’s (Mumbay 1976) and Iman Issa’s (Cairo 1979) various and multiform artistic researches. it’s a wider view that offers new impetus and widen the experiences of contemporary art, nowadays moving beyond geographic borders. This interest witnesses and allows for emergent contexts to create new relationships and collaboration which might eventually develop into a new and mutual enrichment of perspectives in time. Shilpa Gupta , using installations, videos and photos, tries to point out at the limits of advanced capitalism where technology functions as control and boundary instead of being an outlet for free exchange of ideas. The pictures of the exhibition stress the impossibility to look because they undergo a fundamental ambiguity : sometimes it’s us who look away from an often painful and unfair reality, some other times it’s the truth that is hidden to us notwithstanding a rampant information system in actual time. On the other hand Iman Issa focuses on the reality of great cities and has carried out several site specific installations in public spaces and her videos and photos highlight alternative possibilities to look at and live the city. This is emphasized in the series “making places “ : the snapshots catch unexpected particulars of city life like a game where the reproduction of the effect implies a new way of looking and an unusual way to interact with space.

Con Look around la galleria Artericambi offre un assaggio delle articolate ricerche artistiche di Shilpa Gupta (Mumbai, 1976) e Iman Issa (Cairo, 1979). Uno sguardo che si allarga per offrire nuovi stimoli al territorio, per ampliare l’esperienza di un contemporaneo che ormai si muove senza confini geografici. Testimonianza di un interesse che necessariamente deve tener conto di contesti emergenti per creare relazioni e collaborazioni che effettivamente possano svilupparsi nel tempo in un reciproco arricchimento di prospettive. Shilpa Gupta, attraverso installazioni (spesso interattive), video e fotografia, cerca di portare in evidenza i limiti dell’epoca del capitalismo avanzato, dove spesso la tecnologia è usata per scopi di controllo, per porre frontiere invece che per favorire la libera circolazione delle idee. Nelle foto presentate in mostra si evidenzia l’impossibilità dello sguardo in una fondamentale ambiguità: a volte siamo noi a distogliere gli occhi da una realtà spesso dolorosa e ingiusta, altre volte è la verità che ci viene negata pur nella dilagante informazione in tempo reale. Iman Issa, invece, si muove nel contesto delle grandi metropoli e ha realizzato numerose installazioni site-specific in spazi pubblici, tuttavia anche i suoi video e gli scatti fotografici sanno illuminare possibilità alternative per guardare e vivere la città. È quanto si evidenzia nella serie Making places: le istantanee fissano particolari inaspettati del panorama urbano in una sorta di gioco dove la riproduzione dell’effetto implica uno sguardo nuovo e un modo inedito di interagire con gli spazi.
