press release
Artists have a new material: the insatiable desire for the spotlight. Actually not terribly new, just more pronounced. This material, as with all art-making materials, can be manipulated into countless forms. This exhibition examines only a few of these strategic approaches. From sincere gestures to cynical exploitation or shameless self-promotion to mocking self-parody, each of these works explores a different tendency when confronted with the spotlight. For example, French artist Valrie Belin's striking portraits of Michael Jackson impersonators question the boundaries between reality and perception. Through sculpture, photography, film, drawing and installation, these artists investigate the intersection of media and everyday life. Participating artists: Valerie Belin, Daniel Bozhkov, Slater Bradley, Ian Cooper, Brice Dellsberger, Jacob Dyrenforth, Julie Henry, Carol "Riot" Kane, Matt Marello, Tom Sanford, Jim Torok.
This exhibition is organized by CAC associate curator Matt Distel.
