press release

All places have an identity. And this identity is often shaped by the repeated everyday actions that take place there – and the ownership, fellowship, and sense of belonging they create. Everyday activities, however mundane or peculiar, can even conquer a place. That also holds true in the Middle East in spite of political upheaval and conflicts. What activities and what issues of ownership and belonging apply in the Middle East? What customs, habits, and movements give places in the Middle East their identity? That is what Taking Place… aims to show.

The exhibition points to different artistic practices which all share a common interest in how everyday life is expressed – in the widest sense of the term. Thus, Taking Place… incorporates everything from documentary materials and testimonies to sculptural objects and installations and onwards to private spaces of recollection and psychological states of mind.
