press release

The 1970s in Sweden are mainly associated with clear-cut political messages. Throughout the summer, Moderna Museet will be showing art from the 1970s – but from another angle. Aesthetic experimentation with materials, with roots in an earlier decade, is one aspect. Another is the new ideas on art’s eternal questions about form and content which characterised the art of that era. Common elements are perception, spatiality and reflection. Barbro Bäckström, Barbro Östlihn, Einar Höste, Lars Englund, Anna Sjödahl and Torsten Andersson are a few of the artists whose works will be featured in the exhibition.

In addition, a few new acquisitions will be shown – Olafur Eliasson’s installation Blue versus Yellow – a younger cousin of the aesthetic experimentation of the 1960s and 1970s, which was recently aquired with funding from the Friends of Moderna Museet.
