THE THREE CITIES: BERLIN, MILAN, LONDON

STEVEN CLAYDON geboren 1969 in London, England. Lebt in London. Zeichnungen, Grafik, Installation, Videos, Musik

CLAIRE FONTAINE Paris Objekte, Installationen.

RUTH MAY geboren 1974 in Hamburg, Deutschland. Lebt in Hamburg. Zeichnungen, Collagen, Stickbilder.

GIAN DOMENICO SOZZI geboren 1960 in Solaro, Italien. Lebt in Mailand und Noto. Zeichnungen, Malerei, Fotografie, Performances.

Die Arbeiten von Gian Domenico Sozzi inszenieren wie eine Art „Mini-Dramen“ die Oszillation des Künstlers zwischen Nähe und Distanz, Extraversion und Introversion, Zurschaustellung und Verbergen.

JOSH SMITH geboren 1976 in Okinawa, Japan. Lebt in New York. Collagen, Malerei, Installationen.

DIRK STEWEN geboren 1972 in Dortmund, Deutschland. Lebt in Hamburg und Berlin. Fotografien, Zeichnungen, Aquarelle, Collagen, Installationen.

THE THREE CITIES: BERLIN, MILAN, LONDON

The project involves three curators who live and work in different European cities (GYONATA BONVICINI in London, ANNA-CATHARINA GEBBERS in Berlin and PAOLO ZANI in Milan).

Each of the three curators asks the other two to come to his or her home town and organise a joint exhibition at a temporary venue. The venues reflect the site-specific features of each city and at the same time demonstrate their own spatial peculiarities, which in turn influence the selection of artists invited to participate and the works they present. The exhibitions are held during temporary art events that attract visitors from all over the world, and can thus also be read as a metaphor for the hype currently surrounding the art world.

In an age of globalisation, borders seem to pose less of an problem as far as economic mobility and the freedom to travel are concerned, but clearly still exist in terms of wealth, health care and natural resources. Moreover, borders such as that between reality and fiction are discussed not only in art but also with regard to political propaganda, institutional and personal organisation, or public and private space. Borrowing its title from a series of novels by Emile Zola, this performance art and exhibition project explores the specific social, cultural, functional, spatial and material contexts and relations that distinguish the various venues in which it is being staged.

The fact that each of the three curators is based in one of the three cities creates a fluid balance between a deeper knowledge of the local territory and an openness to different realities, such as those brought by the two other curators to each venue.

MILAN: THE FACTORY

In terms of its location – a backyard in the urban focal point of Quartiere Isola –, its architecture and its former function, the former Presbitero pencil factory is highly characteristic of a city famous for design and fashion. These qualities are reflected on a formal level by the works on show – drawings, collages, fabric-based works, videos, photographs and installations by six international artists.

The exhibition will take place during the “START Milano” weekend, when more than 40 galleries and exhibition spaces in Milan jointly celebrate their reopening after the summer break.

MILAN: THE ARTISTS

STEVEN CLAYDON born 1969, London, UK. Lives in London. (drawing, graphic art, installation, video, music)

In Steven Claydon’s work, history is viewed as retrospective, subjective and inherently fictitious, with (cultural) objects representing the satellites that constellate around subjects, situations and rituals.

CLAIRE FONTAINE Paris (object-based art, installation)

Claire Fontaine define themselves as “a readymade artist”. Using Duchampian methods, their objects, installations and wall drawings combine political poetry inspired by Jean-Luc Godard with minimal and conceptual art.

RUTH MAY born 1974, Hamburg, Germany. Lives in Hamburg. (drawing, collage, embroidery)

Ruth May’s large-scale fabric-based pieces display rich textures and complex structures that are reminiscent of Renaissance paintings, combined with iconic elements of popular culture, tattoos and references to 1960s German Pop Art.

GIAN DOMENICO SOZZI born 1960, Solaro, Italy. Lives in Milan and Noto. (drawing, painting, photography, performance)

Gian Domenico Sozzi’s works are like “mini-dramas” which enact the oscillation between proximity and distance, extraversion and introversion, display and disguise.

JOSH SMITH born 1976, Okinawa, Japan. Lives in New York. (collage, painting, installation)

Josh Smith’s art can justifiably be described as ‘bookish’, as his collages – in the form of ‘scatterings’ and subtle compositions – combine typography, ornament, wallpaper-like patterns and letterpress with Renaissance allusions.

DIRK STEWEN born 1972, Dortmund. Lives in Hamburg and Berlin. (photography, drawing, watercolour, collage, installation)

Dirk Stewen’s works explore form and process, seducing the viewer with an uncanny sensitivity to material and imagery while defying the formal classifications of photography, collage, sculpture and drawing.
