V-Effekt / In and Out of Place

Anna-Catharina Gebbers | Bibliothekswohnung freut sich, zum ersten Mal in Deutschland eine Auswahl von Arbeiten aus der Zabludowicz Collection zeigen zu können.

In den gezeigten Videoarbeiten werden Erzählungen von Geschichte thematisiert und Anregungen aus verschiedenen ästhetischen Bedeutungszusammenhängen verarbeitet. Kunsthistorische Referenzen, gefundenes Material oder traditionelle Rituale fungieren als Auslöser, die während des kreativen Prozesses Verschiebungen unterworfen werden, die die Quelle verfremden und komplexere kritische Umstände offenlegen. Im Sinne des Brecht‘schen V-Effekts wird die Aufmerksamkeit des Betrachters dabei auf die Art und Weise der Erzählung gelenkt statt sie dem Selbstverständlichen und dem Illusionären anheim zu geben. Die Ansammlung historischer Fakten und ihre interpretierende Darstellung werden vielmehr selbst zum Thema. Geschichte und ihre Erzählungen erweisen sich als Sammlungen von Dingen, die wechselnden Ordnungen und Inszenierungen unterzogen werden.

Der nicht-kommerzielle Ausstellungsraum Anna-Catharina Gebbers | Bibliothekswohnung befindet sich drei Gehminuten entfernt vom Berliner Ensemble, das von Brecht initiert wurde und gegenüber vom wieder aufgebauten Friedrichstadtpalast, -- gegründet von Max Reinhardt, Brechts Förderer und hinsichtlich des theatralen Illusionismus sein Gegenspieler.

Die in V-Effekt gezeigten Arbeiten stammen alle aus der Londoner Zabludowicz Collection. Anna-Catharina Gebbers ist zur Zeit 176-Gastkuratorin und diese Ausstellung ist Teil von In and Out of Place, ihrem fortlaufenden Projekt für 176 / Zabludowicz Collection, das das Konzept des Sammelns und der Sammlung aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln untersucht. Im August 2008 hatte Catharina Gebbers gemeinsam mit 176 / Zabludowicz Collection etwa 120 Künstler eingeladen, am Ausstellungsprojekt Krautcho Club/In and Out of Place in Berlin und London teilzunehmen. Die abschließende Ausstellung des Projektes In and Out of Place wird vom 25. Februar bis 9. May 2010 im Ausstellungsraum 176, London stattfinden.

176/Zabludowicz Collection kollaboriert regelmäßig mit Gastkuratoren und Künstlern für die Realisierung von Projekten mit der Zabludowicz Collection und dem Ausstellungsraum in der 176 Prince of Wales Road. Die Zabludowicz Collection enthält Werke von einigen der innovativsten und aufregendsten Künstler der Welt und umfasst etwa 2.000 Werke, die von 1947 bis 2009 entstanden sind und von über 600 Künstlern aus 49 Ländern stammen. 176 / Zabludowicz Collection ist ein nicht-kommerzieller, philanthropisch ausgerichteter Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst in einer ehemaligen methodistischen Kirche im Norden von London. 176 / Zabludowicz Collection engagiert sich für die Teilnahme und Bildung im Bereich der bildenden Kunst. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf der Einladung an die Anwohner, Studenten und Gruppen aus der Gemeinde, sich mit zeitgenössischer bildender Kunst auseinanderzusetzen.

Anna-Catharina Gebbers | Bibliothekswohnung is pleased to present for the first time in Germany a selection of works from the Zabludowicz Collection.

The moving image works in V-Effekt thematise cultural and historical narratives and take their inspiration from various existing aesthetic contexts. Art historical references, found footage or traditional rituals act as initiators which, during the creative process, are subjected to certain shifts that obscure the source and reveal a more complex critical situation. In a process that may be compared to the Brechtian V-effect, the viewer’s attention is drawn to a particular mode of narration used in the work, instead of to the obvious – and sometimes illusory – content of the work. Through this effect, a collection of historical facts and the ways in which they have been interpreted become the central subjects of the works. History and its narration undergo changing orders of meaning and are staged in various ways.

The non-profit exhibition space Anna-Catharina Gebbers | Bibliothekswohnung is located three minutes walk away from the famous Berliner Ensemble founded by Brecht, and opposite the rebuilt Friedrichstadtpalast, a theatre founded by Brecht‘s patron and in terms of illusion his antipode Max Reinhardt.

V-Effekt consists of existing moving image works from the Zabludowicz Collection. Anna-Catharina Gebbers is the current guest curator at 176 and this exhibition makes up part of In out of Place her ongoing project for 176 / Zabludowicz Collection which examines the idea of collecting and collections from various perspectives. In August 2008 Catharina Gebbers and 176/Zabludowicz Collection invited about 120 artists to be part of Krautcho Club / In and Out of Place a collection based project exhibited both in Berlin and London. The final exhibition of Catharina Gebbers's residency will be held at 176 from 25 February - 9 May 2010.

The Zabludowicz Collection is comprised of works by some of the world's most innovative and exciting emerging artists, and contains almost 2,000 artworks produced between 1947 and 2009 by over 600 artists from 49 countries. 176 / Zabludowicz Collection is a non-profit, philanthropic contemporary art space housed in a former Methodist Chapel in North London. 176 / Zabludowicz Collection has an ongoing commitment to participation and education, which involves inviting all visitors with a focus on local residents, students and community groups to engage with contemporary art.
