press release

This winter the MAJ presents in its temporary exhibitions’ galleries a large selection of recent acquisitions. Works by artists such as Heinrich Aldegrever, Nicolas Baier, Kenojuak Ashevak, Sonia Delaunay, John Richard Fox, Geoffrey James, Naomi London, John Max, Georg Penz, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Henri Rouault et Henri Venne are featured amongst the more than 50 works acquired since 2007.

What Happens Next bears witness to the richness and diversity of the MAJ’s collection as well as to the museum’s dynamism and its commitment to make its collection accessible to the public. Offering an exceptional overview of historical and contemporary artistic production from Québec, Canada and Europe, the show is a unique opportunity to discover never before exhibited works acquired thanks to the generosity of a great number of loyal benefactors. Amongst theses, we would like to stress the financial support of the Fondation René Malo, which enabled the MAJ to establish its first acquisitions’ fund. This major contribution coupled with the York Wilson Endowment Award won in 2011 and the support of many benefactors, enabled the MAJ to purchase a significant number of major works by such Canadian contemporary artists as Pascal Grandmaison, Ed Pien and Yann Pocreau.

The MAJ stopped acquiring works for a while in order to establish a new acquisitions’ policy and to review its management of the collection. As a result of this new policy, the MAJ can now proceed to enrich its collection by making targeted acquisitions, as did Father Corbeil, c.s.v., when he begun building an art collection for the Clerics of Saint-Viator.
