Agnès Varda (b. 1928, Brüssel; d. 2019, Paris) was a film director, documentary artist, installation artist and film theorist. She was one of the most important representatives of French cinema and, along with Godard, formed the center of gravity of the Nouvelle Vague. In 1985 she became the first woman to receive the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
