Frans Masereel (b. 1889, Blankenberge, Belgium, d. 1972, Avignon, France) was a graphic artist and painter, who mainly who was known for his expressionistic, social-critical, woodcutting cycles ("My Hours", 1919; "History without words", 1920). He studied in Ghent, Paris and Tunisia and lived in Ghent, Paris, Geneva, Equihen, Avignon, Bezis, Saarbrücken and Nice. In 1950 he received the prize of the Venice Biennale.
