Juan A. Gaitán studierte Kunst und Kunstgeschichte an der University of British Columbia / Kanada und am Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver. 2006 bis 2008 war er Mitglied des Board of Directors der Western Front Society und arbeitete als externer Kurator an der Morris und Helen Belkin Art Gallery in Vancouver. 2009 bis Ende 2011 war er Kurator am Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam und von Ende 2011 bis Mitte 2012 lehrte er als außerordentlicher Professor am California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Im Frühjahr 2014 wird er die 8. Berlin Biennale kuratieren. Juan A. Gaitán veröffentlichte zahlreiche Schriften u.a. in Art Nexus, Fillip, Mousse und The Exhibitionist.
