Sam Gilliam (b. 1933, Tupelo/Mississippi; d. 2022, Washington, D.C.) lived in Washington D.C. He was one of the most important representatives of abstract painting in the USA. In 2017 he participated at the 57th Venice Biennale. Sam Gilliam studied at the University of Louisville. He held a professorship at Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh and at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
