6th Annual Altoids Curiously Strong Collection

Since 1998, the Altoids Curiously Strong Collection of contemporary art has been a showcase for some of the most talented, emerging visual artists working in America today. The Collection includes work made in all media, including photography, video, mixed media, sculpture painting and digital art. Each year, Altoids engages the expertise of a selection committee comprised of prominent artists, curators and gallerists and challenges them to identify artists who produce some of the most curious, strong original artwork being created today. Based on the search committee's recommendations, Altoids purchases between 20 and 25 new works annually; this year's Collection is comprised of 23 works.

To provide meaningful exposure for the selected artists and their works, Altoids coordinates a four to six-city tour across America each year. The Collection has traveled to major cities such as New York, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Las Vegas. This is the first time for the Collection to be seen in Austin.

At the conclusion of each year's tour, the newest installation of the Curiously Strong Collection join the other 110 works in the permanent collection at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City. The donation of the Altoids Curiously Strong Collection to the New Museum is the first-ever donation of a corporate collection to the New Museum, one of America's foremost contemporary art museums.
