André Derain (1880-1954) was one of the most significant French artists. Together with Matisse he formed the sensational and experimental Fauvist movement in 1905, and around World War I Derain was among the most recognised artists of his time.
Later on, he isolated himself and fell into oblivion. Recently there has been a profound international interest in his works. With the help of museums all over the world the exhibition will present a rich selection of both early and late works by Derain.
Statens Museum for Kunst is one of the first museums to highlight André Derains work with this exhibition. The project har been realized in cooperation with Deputy Director of Centre Pompidou in Paris Isabelle Monod-Fontaine and Palazzo dei Diamanti.
