VW Cinema is pleased to present two nights of films by Wilhelm Hein, the German punk pioneer of experimental film whose career spans four decades. His continually subversive practice is dedicated to the freedom of expression in all its forms. Presented by Hein, this program comprises three 16mm films accompanied on the first night by live music.
Wednesday 6 July: Doppelprojektionen I-IV (1971/72) featuring live music by Tim and John Blue; and "KALI-Filme" (1987/88). The double projection begins with an ordinary view out the window and ends in an intense abstract flicker. This presentation of Doppelprojektionen I-IV, accompanied by a live musical set performed by Tim and John Blue, marks a totally new presentation of the work. KALI-Filme is a collaborative project between Wilhelm and Birgit Hein. This assemblage of found footage from "trivial" genres explores taboos in our contemporary culture that surface in low budget "exploitation" movies.
Thursday 7 July: You Killed The Underground Film, or The Real Meaning of Kunst Bleibt, Bleibt (1989/2011). Assembled from over 10 years of footage Hein shot and collected, this evolving cinematic project is a challenging example of what it means to make politically relevant underground film in an increasingly commercial world. The film's title is partly derived from the text of a performance by Jack Smith at the 1974 Cologne Art Fair, which Hein documented and later used here in the film's prologue. Hein's film is a burlesque of aesthetic strategies and possibilities, encompassing the broad range of the artist's influences.
Wilhelm Hein will be present at both screenings. For more information please call the gallery or visit vwberlin.com.
