press release

The Guggenheim's third biennial HUGO BOSS PRIZE was awarded to Slovenian artist Marjetica Potrc in November 2000. According to the prize criteria, the award is given in recognition of an artist whose career exemplifies a significant new development in contemporary art, one with international cultural reverberations. The prize, which carries with it a substantial cash award, sets no restrictions in terms of age, gender, race, nationality, or medium. Potrc was selected from a group of seven short-listed artists by an international jury of curators and museum directors. The jurors narrowed their original list of over fifty nominees to a diverse group of finalists that included—in addition to the winner—Vito Acconci, Maurizio Cattelan, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, Tom Friedman, Barry Le Va, and Tunga.
