This exhibition retraces Joëlle Tuerlinckx's (1958) practice via new pieces and through the reactivation of earlier works and constellations. As the title indicates, even if it originates from a reading slip in an article about the economy entitled ‘World in Progress', it bears upon the examination of this short- circuiting of thought itself (Work in Progress).

Joëlle Tuerlinckx organises her exhibitions according to a movement that can be qualified as elementary, not only because she lays bare all the conventions that accompany a conventional understanding of art, but also because each exhibition is built around an investigation, an experiment around what it has managed to define as the givens of a specific space-time: that of the architecture of the institution where it intervenes. Exploring her subjects (lines, points, forms, floating figures...) as inexhaustibly new givens, multiplying the originals, and effacing the clues and bearings - gravity, weight, balance, on and off camera... - of such historically defined practices as sculpture, painting, cinema, she makes WIELS resound with themes and notions that refuse all closure, and which she had already staged in previous exhibitions: No Story No History, In Real Time, Stretch Museum, Les Étants données, Bild Oder, Le Présent absolument, Crystal Time,...

This will be the first large-scale presentation of Joëlle Tuerlinckx's work in Brussel, the city where she lives and works.
