Lucinda Devlin, b. 1947 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. Lives and works in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
Devlin’s photos are meant to be disturbing. We can be fascinated by their formal beauty and rigid compositions, and by the antiseptic cleanness of the rooms, like were the rooms operating theatres in a hospital. But through their documentary, cool aesthetics, the photos embed on us an emotional involvement, and make us reflect on the scenes that normally are enacted in these rooms.
Devlin’s series of 30 photos from the death rows of American prisons was part of the main exhibition of the 49th Biennale in Venice in 2001. The Omega Suites has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries around the world. For the first time the series is now shown in Norway. The exhibited photos belong to Stavanger International Collection and adjoining private collections in Stavanger.
