Markus Willeke: NIGHTRIDER

Rücklichter und Scheinwerfer von Autos auf nasser Fahrbahn sind einer nächtlichen Choreografie unterworfen, die den Betrachter an eine Erfahrung erinnert, vielleicht auch nur an einen Kinofilm. Kinobilder sind oft Markus Willekes Referenz. Doch er setzt diese nicht als Ikonen der Popkultur ein, sondern unterläuft ihre Suggestivkraft mit malerischen Mitteln, um seine Sicht auf die Welt auszudrücken – alles ist nur Oberfläche, mitten im rasenden Lebensrhythmus steht die Erde plötzlich still und im nächsten Moment öffnet sich ein Abgrund.

The rear or head lights of cars on a wet road are subject to a night choreography, which reminds the viewer of an experience, but perhaps only of a movie he saw. Cinematic images often are the reference for Markus Willeke’s work, but he not just uses them as icons of popular culture, but subverts their suggestive power with painterly means, to express his view onto the world. Everything is just superficial, when suddenly, in the middle of throbbing life, the earth stands still and there is an abyss opening up.
