Rolf Koppel: Soliloquy

Im Zentrum der Arbeit Rolf Koppels stehen die Frage nach der Identität der Person und die Untersuchung des Körpers als Ausdrucksmittel. Der Künstler orientiert sich in seiner Arbeit an Themen der Mythologie, der Geschichte, der historischen Malerei und Skulptur. Die Reinszenierung und Anverwandlung der fiktiven Figur ist Inhalt der photographischen Seance. Dominierend ist, und dies hängt mit der schonungslosen Untersuchung der Geschlechterrolle des Menschen zusammen, das Thema von Eros und Sexus, aber auch die Verwandlung des Körpers und seiner Aktionen ins zweidimensionale Bild als erotisches Objekt einer Sehnsucht nach dem Abbild. Rolf Koppel ist nicht an den skulpturalen Dimensionen des Körpers interessiert oder an psychophysischen Abläufen, vielmehr ist seine Arbeit motiviert von der Sehnsucht, im Bilde ein „Anderer“ zu werden, eine andere Identität zu gewinnen, wenn nicht dauernd, dann zumindest im Bilde. Central to the underlying thematic orientation of Rolf Koppel’s opus are the identity of the individual and the examination of the body as tools of expression. The artist shares an interest in sources from mythology, history, art history, and sculpture. Reenactment and adaptation of the fictional create the content of the photographic seance. Eros and sex are the dominant themes, an inevitable consequence of a no-holds-barred approach to a critical examination of human gender roles; Yet equally important is the transposition of the body and its actions into the two-dimensional image as the erotic object of a yearning for identity. Rolf Koppel is less concerned with the sculptural dimensions of the body or with psychophysical processes. His motivation derives instead from a longing to become an "other" in the visual image, a desire to acquire a new identity, if not permanently, then at least in the photograph.
