SONSBEEK PUBLIC ART EXHIBITION
In 1949 Arnhem held its first international sculpture exhibition in Park Sonsbeek. Its open-air setting focussed on the idea of taking works of art to the people. From 1949 to 1958, SONSBEEK took place every three years, after which the intervals were irregular: 1966, 1971 (curator: Wim Beeren), 1986 (curator: Saskia Bos), 1993 (curator: Valerie Smith), 2001 (curator: Jan Hoet), 2008 (curator: Anna Tilroe) and 2016 (curator: ruangrupa). SONSBEEK ’16: transACTION launches the new quadrennial cycle: SONSBEEK will appear every four years.
