WEINSTEIN GALLERY: 20 YEARS

Opening reception Friday, October 28, 6:00-8:00pm

In 1996, Martin Weinstein opened the Weinstein Gallery in a small storefront in South Minneapolis. The gallery has gone on to present over 140 exhibitions and exhibit at more than 50 national and international art fairs. As the gallery expanded and the roster of artists grew, Weinstein Gallery's commitment to creating beautiful and meaningful exhibitions has remained the hallmark.

Weinstein Gallery works with internationally recognized artists working in all media, with a special focus on modern and contemporary photography. Early exhibitions that helped define the gallery's program include Chuck Close: Self Portraits and Man Ray: Prints and Objects, as well as exhibitions of work by Luis Gonzalez Palma, Mike and Doug Starn, and Nicolas Africano. The gallery has been committed to presenting museum-quality retrospective exhibitions of influential photographers such as August Sander, Andrew Kertesz, Mario Giacomelli, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Gordon Parks, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Additionally, the gallery has organized important historical group shows that have added to the scholarly dialogue surrounding photography. Examples include The Pyramids: 150 Years of Photographic Fascination, The Rite of Assembly, a unique historical analysis of the genre of group photography, and The Fashion Show, an exhibition devoted to fashion images by leading women photographers, the first exhibition of its kind in the United States. Lastly, and perhaps most rewarding, the gallery has been devoted to not only showing the work of Minnesota artists but guiding and fostering their careers.

For the 20th anniversary exhibition, Weinstein Gallery has assembled work celebrating artistic highlights of the past and the coming years. Artists include Nicolas Africano, Charles Biederman, Edward Burtynsky, Chuck Close, Elliott Erwitt, Erik Madigan Heck, Annie Leibovitz, Vera Lutter, Robert Mapplethorpe, Magnus Nilsson, Ruben Nusz, Roxy Paine, Luis Gonzalez Palma, Gordon Parks, David Rathman, Man Ray, Nancy Rexroth, Alec Soth, Mike and Doug Starn, James Turrell, and Paolo Ventura.

Weinstein Gallery would like to thank friends and clients for their support of the gallery, local and national press for the thoughtful reviews and coverage, and most of all, the artists who have inspired us.
