press release

The Drawing Center is honored that its exhibition 3 x Abstraction: New Methods of Drawing by Hilma af Klint, Emma Kunz, and Agnes Martin has been awarded "Best Show in an Alternative Space" by AICA, the American Section of the International Art Critics Association. AICA's distinguished awards will be presented on February 2, 2006 at The Jewish Museum, New York.

This major touring historical exhibition, co-curated by Catherine de Zegher and Hendel Teicher, will present the work of three pioneering women artists: Hilma af Klint (Sweden, 1862–1944), Emma Kunz (Switzerland, 1892–1963), and Agnes Martin (Canada/U.S., 1912–2004). These three artists, each from a different generation spanning the last 100 years, approached geometric abstraction not as formalism, but as a means of visualizing philosophical, scientific, and transcendental ideas. 3 x Abstraction will introduce the work of af Klint and Kunz — which has been eclipsed for so long — and will re-visit Martin's work from a new perspective.
