A House is not a Home / A Home is not a House is a double exhibition that addresses the binary logic of identification and identity. The exhibition presents the works of thirteen artists who have in common a relation to spatiality. They share an intuition that links architecture to embodiment. Occupying a certain space, the works do not take their place for granted. They contest the course that leads them from their conception to their reception. Though the works address a visitor’s attention, they also refuse to be subjected to a normative interpretation.

A Home is not a House takes up the task of showing works of the same artists who were in the first exhibition. As does a mirror, this reflection addresses the relation of identity to space, from the other side. By creating another image of the exhibition, one that begins on the inside, the second iteration makes the house unhomely again. Decoration and architecture get mixed up.

From the comfortable and familiar feeling of the first show, the artworks now grow a double and release the anxiety of identity. They share the awareness of this return with the visitor and become other in many ways. They come back, dig deeper, repeat, imitate and confuse.

In this restaging of an exhibition, the House never equals the Home. From this déjà-vu, one might be left with a feeling of estrangement. That which you turn around and look for is already gone. And the subject surfaces haunting.
