Aaron Siskind based his photographic compositions on light and shade, texture and form—stirring emotional responses in his viewers.

Aaron Siskind (1903—1991) began to photograph in 1931 and continued throughout his life. Over the course of an extraordinary 60-year career, he produced a rich and highly influential body of work. Initially Siskind created social-documentary photographs in his native New York City. Within a decade, he evolved to a radical style of photographic abstractions. Although the viewer can almost always identify what was photographed—peeling paint, architectural details, tar in a road—the subject matter was of no actual interest to Siskind. His primary passion was to create expressive formal abstractions.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, celebrates the 100th anniversary of Siskind´s birth with a succinct survey of approximately 50 works from the 1930s through the 1980s. Photographs drawn from the rich collection of Siskind´s work at the MFAH are complemented by select pieces from Houston collections.
