Abdul Sharif

Abdul Sharif Baruwa was born in London in 1975. At present he lives and works in Vienna.

The exhibition that is shown in the Gallery Asbaek is the product of his time spent taking part in the “Artists in residence program” at the Centro Cultural Andratx during the month of july 2005.

Abdul Sharif came to Mallorca fascinted by the book “The cave” written by Platon and inspired by this and by the surroundings at his studio; chairs, tables, shelves, lamps etc. he has created the pieces that we present in such a way that we can follow his creative process. The paintings are the fruit of the shadows projected by the chairs and the table in the studio on the canvas, but instead of converting them into an “idea” he lets us see each stroke of the brush, which gives it a human touch and moves it away from perfection.

In the rest of the installations he gives us the opportunity to take a look inside of his world (the green studio) and see his exercise equipment, remembering which importance the worshipping of the body had in the Ancient Greece; his playing with the light and shadow caused by the lamps and the transparency that they can bring about, and his search for stones, that with the tireless passing of time, have developed holes, that are just as difficult to explain, as the evolutionary process that have created the limestone caves that we find here in Mallorca.
