press release

From 8 October 2009, sala rekalde will be hosting a solo exhibition of work by Abigail Lazkoz. For the show, this artist from Bilbao has designed an installation based on vast black-and-white drawings that are both freestanding and hung on the wall, alongside vertical and horizontal structures that are deployed across the space as a metaphor on war and destruction. With its deceptively simple line and through the construction of enormous sets, this work plunges the spectator into reflection on aspects of the reality that surrounds our lives.

Abigail Lazkoz (Bilbao, 1972) won the 2004 Gure artea Prize, has been included in international biennials and has had exhibitions in galleries in Spain and abroad. She has recently shown work at the Musac in León and at the Bilbao Guggenheim and has been selected for the “Greater New York” exhibition organised by the P.S.1-MoMA in New York.

A catalogue accompanying the exhibition will be published by sala rekalde, focussing on this new work by Abigail Lazkoz and its creative development. The catalogue will also include an extensive essay by the author Iria Candela and a conversation between the artist and the exhibition curator, Leire Vergara. The book will be designed by Albert Folch Studio.
