press release

Trieste's Galleria Torbandena presents ABSTRACTA, an exhibition dedicated to the masters of European and American Informal art of the Twentieth century. The exhibition will include a selection of about twenty works of some of the most representative names of international post-war informal art. Today unrivalled stars of high-level international collections or exhibited in the world's greatest museums, these are the artists who, devoid of any pictorial formalism, have been able to codify a totally new communication system, a "non-formal" vocabulary that the whole artistic world that followed has employed to give voice to its freer expressions. On the other hand, due to a certain "haste" to ascribe the movement to a precise historical phase, actually rather convenient precisely for that same market which has decreed its great commercial success of the last twenty years, the world of contemporary art, that in the last decades has shown little inclination towards painting, has filed away the whole issue, considering closed an artistic chapter that, instead, especially due to its direct heirs . more than to the late works of the great masters - has kept expressing its own vital autonomy, its coherence and its ability to adjust to the new requirements of art.

It shall come as no surprise, therefore, that after more than a decade of great experimentation in the field of new-media and digital photography, in a time of technological euphoria surely able to single out and sanctify artistic figures of undoubted value, the claims of painting emerge again, even of abstract painting, fed up with being confined in museum spaces or in the lounge of the millionaire of the moment, and instead showing its vitality, ready to resume its role as a means of investigation, of debate and of representation of reality.

Our exhibition is a homage to the works of some of those artists who, halfway through the last century, have undertaken the path of abstraction, works that today more than ever appear lively and meaningful: to Americans Hans Hofmann, Sam Francis and Mark Tobey, Spanish Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida and Antonio Saura, French-German Hans Hartung, Dutch Karel Appel, Chilean Roberto Sebastian Matta, Croatian Edo Murtic, and to Italian artists Emilio Vedova, Giuseppe Santomaso and Giulio Turcato.

On the upper floor a selection of works dedicated to Milan's Informal art, with artists active from the 40's to the 70's: Umberto Milani, Costantino Guenzi, Mario Raciti, Angelo Verga, Giancarlo Ossola.

In the gallery's smaller space the homage to a great informal Argentinian artist: Esteban Lisa, active between the 30's and the 70's, to whom the gallery will dedicate a great retrospective in October. The exhibition will focus on a selection of works from the 50's and the 60's.

The exhibition will be open until May 31, 2009.
