Adam Adach

In his paintings Adam Adach explores both personal and historical memory. In his pieces, personal themes often based on memories from childhood intertwine with references to history and collective experience. The artist draws inspiration from anonymous photographs, press clippings, book illustrations, scenes he himself recorded using his photo camera or in his sketchbook. Though almost entirely lacking narration, Adach's paintings do manifest a kind of emblematic anecdotal quality. In his most recent works, exhibited in 2006 in Vienna, the artist tracks totalitarian ideologies whose traces remain in architectural monuments. Separating them from their contexts, he demonstrates the timeless power of these melancholy images.

This presentation at the CCA features new works produced especially with this exhibition in mind. At its core it constitutes a singular painterly commentary on Polish reality as observed by an artist who spent the last years examining it from afar and thus retaining it primarily in his nostalgic memory.

Adam Adach (b. 1962) obtained a veterinary degree in Warsaw before emigrating to France in the late 1980s. While abroad, he completed the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Paris. He returned to Poland in 2006 and lives and works in Warsaw.

The artist is represented by a number of galleries in Europe and the United States, including the Galerie Jean Brolly in Paris, the Galerie Nächst St. Stephan - Rosemarie Schwarzwälder in Vienna, Arndt & Partner of Berlin and Zurich, and the D'Amelio Terras Gallery, New York.
