press release

Air Guitar explores the relationship between contemporary art and rock music from the perspective of the artist as music fan. It is a perspective that demands a timely and unapologetic glance backward to the aspirations and suburban angst of the adolescent and to the legacy of the teenage bedroom. While it is important to say that theirs is not a nostalgic revisiting of rock’s history, for many of the artists in Air Guitar their past musical interests will always remain clearly in their sights. It is almost as if they and their onetime musical allegiances were frozen forever in a mosh-pit moment in time. Special Late Night Openings and Events Cornerhouse Galleries will be open until 9pm every Thursday for the duration of Air Guitar, with talks, special events and live music in Gallery 3 and Cornerhouse Cafe Bar. Pick up an exhibitions flyer to find out more or just turn up on the night. Air Guitar is organised and toured by Milton Keynes Gallery and funded by the National Touring Programme through the Arts Council of England. The exhibition will also tour to Angel Row, Nottingham and Tullie House, Carlisle. A fully illustrated, 74 page exhibition catalogue, with texts by Emma Mahony and Mark Wilsher is available.
